Every month I will review the Azed competition slip and will add indicators to the list which appear there and seem to have merit. I have introduced a category &#8216;Contentious&#8217; to sit alongside &#8216;Advanced&#8217; and &#8216;Standard&#8217;; this category will be used for indicators which:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">I have seen used in puzzles but I consider to be questionable (eg &#8216;during&#8217; as an insertion indicator)<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">I have\u00a0used in a puzzle and which have been\u00a0rejected by a crossword editor (eg &#8216;reacting&#8217; as a reversal indicator, rejected by The Listener)<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Azed has explicitly stated that he will not accept (eg &#8216;extremely&#8217; to indicate the first and last letters of a word, see the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.andlit.org.uk\/azed\/slip.php?comp_no=2330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">slip for AZ 2,330<\/a><\/span>)<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Visitors to this site have suggested may be unsound for reasons which I consider to have foundation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This month sees (as mentioned above) the flagging of &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">extremely<\/span>&#8216; as a contentious first+last letter selection indicator, and the inclusion as &#8216;Standard&#8217; of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">rampant<\/span> (anagram indicator, adjective)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">altering<\/span> (anagram indicator, present participle of intransitive verb)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">trumped-up<\/span> (anagram indicator, adjective)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I have <em>not<\/em> included &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">leadership<\/span>&#8216;, &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">entrance<\/span>&#8216; or &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">entry<\/span>&#8216; (all first letter indicators),\u00a0or\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;sacking\/sacks<\/span>&#8216; (containment),\u00a0\u00a0and won&#8217;t do unless they receive any support from readers, since I can&#8217;t justify any of them to myself based on the meanings ascribed by Chambers.
